Jiufen — that lantern-strewn slope above Keelung harbour — is the photograph everyone takes home from Taiwan. It is also the place most visitors get slightly wrong. They arrive at the wrong hour, walk the wrong direction through the alleys, and leave with a thin, polite memory of a town that, on the right evening, can take your breath away.
We drive there several times a week. Here is how we tell our friends to do it.
What Jiufen actually is
Jiufen (九份, "nine portions") was a 19th-century gold-mining village built onto the steep hillside facing the Pacific. After the gold ran out the town almost vanished — until a 1989 film, A City of Sadness, and later the design likeness in Spirited Away, brought it back as a pilgrimage site for travellers from Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan.
Today its main draw is a narrow, covered, lantern-lit shopping street (Shuqi Road) and the tea houses perched above it. At dusk, when the lights come on, it is one of the most cinematic places in East Asia. At noon, in full sun, it is just a busy alley with souvenir shops.
The single mistake most visitors make
They arrive at 11am, leave at 3pm, and never see the lanterns lit.
Day-tour buses run on a 10am–3pm rhythm. That is the worst window. The alleys are at peak crowd, the famous tea-house view is washed out by midday glare, and you are gone before the magic hour.
The right way to time it
- Arrive at 15:30 – 16:00. The bus crowd is thinning. You'll have the streets to yourself for an hour.
- Tea-house seat at 17:00. Book a table at A-Mei Tea House (阿妹茶樓) or Jiufen Tea House for the upper terrace as the sun drops.
- Lanterns on at ~18:00. Walk back through Shuqi Road as it lights up. This is the photograph.
- Leave by 19:30. Late enough for the night view, early enough to beat the second wave.
How to get there (and why most options are painful)
The textbook answer — train from Taipei Main to Ruifang, then bus 788 — is ninety minutes each way, plus a queue at Ruifang station that, on weekends, can be forty minutes alone. By the time you reach Jiufen you have used half your patience getting there.
A taxi from Taipei is faster but the meter runs the whole time you are walking the alleys. Most travellers end up with a private charter for the day — door-to-door pickup, the driver waits while you eat dinner, and you get home without the late-night crowd at the bus stop. That is what we do.
What to eat (and what to skip)
- Peanut ice cream rolls (花生捲冰淇淋). The signature street snack. Get it at A-Zhu (阿珠雪在燒) — the queue is the line.
- Taro balls (芋圓) at Lai-A-Po (賴阿婆). The original. Most visitors go to the lookalike next door by mistake.
- Skip: the ¥150-equivalent "souvenir" pineapple cakes on the main street. Buy them at the airport instead.
Pair it with Shifen, not Yehliu
Shifen (10 minutes inland from Jiufen) is the sky-lantern village. The two go together as a single afternoon: Shifen for lanterns and the small waterfall by 14:00, Jiufen for tea and dusk. Yehliu is a lovely geological park but it is in the opposite direction — combining them is an exhausting day. Pick one.
One last thing
If you only have one evening for "Old Taiwan", spend it here. Walk slowly. Sit in the tea-house. Watch the harbour lights come on across the water. Jiufen rewards the patient traveller more than almost anywhere else in Taiwan.
